Ways to Weave Kindness into Homeschooling


Kindness is a virtue that most parents want to instill in their children. One reason we’ve chosen to homeschool is so that we can work intentional values into our children’s education. We are always discussing how we can add these values to the world. Here are some specific ways we incorporate kindness into our homeschooling curriculum.

Ways to Show Kindness

1. Set a Good Example

Model the behavior you’d like to see your children mirror. When you are intentionally choosing kindness with family (including your children), friends, and strangers, be sure to discuss it with your kids.

2. Volunteer

Consider volunteering occasionally or on a regular basis with organizations that welcome kids’ participation. Take your whole family with you to make a difference! Nursing homes especially welcome children as visitors to delight their residents.

3. Gift Handmade Trinkets

Create kindness gifts for friends and family. These can be for special occasions or any day!

4. Write & Mail Love

Choose a day of the week to write to others as a part of your homeschooling curriculum. Create birthday and holiday cards for friends and family, or write letters to pen pals to spread joy.

5. Read Books

Choose quality children’s books that promote kindness, and take time to discuss this theme with your family.

6. Search for Kindness

Go on a kindness scavenger hunt with your kids!

7. Recognize Kindness

When you see your children being kind to each other and others, be sure to name the act and praise it!
